MMOexp Diablo 4: They've made a mobile Diablo

We have been here before or, if you're lucky, somewhere similar. When Diablo 3 was released in 2012 an auction house that was real money where players could purchase and sell their items. In theory, it was there in order to stop cheating and scamming that beset the trading of items in Diablo 2. But in order to steer players towards Auction House, Blizzard lowered loot drop rates in the game to an such a degree that equipping your character with a weapon became a tedious chore and the game overall was not enjoyable to play. After the auction house, which was not well-liked, was eliminated and drop rates have been increased since 2014 Diablo 3 instantly became more enjoyable, even before improvements of Reaper of Souls. Reaper of Souls expansion lifted it to classic status.

Lesson: It might seem sensible to try to monetize Diablo's loot. However, as soon as you do, you drain the fun from the game. It's the same in Diablo Immortal and it's evident before it gets to the endgame since it's a part of the game's design. Drops on loot aren't as impactful the character's progression is artificially controlled and distributed across too many systems and are too sluggish and granular. It's more carefully concealed than at the beginning of Diablo 3, but it's a similarly unrewarding slog. Buying a battle pass or spending huge amounts on legendary crests won't do much, because paying for an excellent item drop will never be as thrilling like just getting one.

I'm not entirely sure if there is a way to separate the fundamental elements that make Diablo enjoyable from the mechanics of free-to-play commercialization. If it could be, Blizzard and NetEase have not found the answer. They've made a mobile Diablo that's slick, enjoyable, and even quite generous at first. But if you spend enough time playing it, you'll realize that the heart of the game has been ripped out into pieces and then given back to you piecemeal.
